BIOGRAPHY
Marisol Vane works almost entirely with machines that are failing in interesting ways: a Juno with a bad voice card, a four-track with a warped capstan, a spring reverb that has been dropped more than once. What comes out of that is not noise — it is unusually careful, patient pop music with the edges worn off. She records at home, alone, in short bursts, and arrives with music that is essentially finished; our job on both her records has been mostly to stay out of the way and find someone to master it who understands that the drift is deliberate. Live she performs behind a table with her back half-turned to the room, which sounds unwelcoming and is in fact the opposite. ‘Static Bloom’ was the record that told us Nightform was not a guitar label. ‘Doorway Tapes’ is in progress.
