Cold Kitchen

Nell wrote this in a flat with no furniture in it, which you can hear in every reverb tail on the record — we recorded most of it in the same empty room rather than try to fake the sound later. Six songs, twenty-four minutes, and one voice doing almost all of it: the only overdubs are a piano that was already in the building and a bass part played by the engineer at three in the morning. ‘New Street’ was written the day the keys were handed over and recorded eleven days later. It is the most direct record on the label and the one we are asked about most. Four hundred copies on black, with a photocopied lyric sheet folded by hand.
